SETTING UP A WEB GALLERY with PHOTOSHOP
BUILDING A WEB SITE
All files need to be optimized(reduce file size) for the web. Follow these instructions before creating a web gallery: Optimizing your files
Instructions for creating a web gallery of your optimized unit images: How to set up a Web Gallery
SETTING HYPERLINKS TO YOUR HOME PAGE
To set up the links to your homepage menu, you will need an html editor like Dreamweaver, GoLive, Frontpage, or a wordprocessor like Word or Notepad.
I understand this portion of the class may be an issue for some students. Don't be too concerned about publishing your work to your webpage. I can help you to maintain this.
Yes, the objective of the class is to learn Photoshop; not to learn web posting, and if creating a web link is beyond your interest at this time, you may just submit your files to the DROP BOX in the Blackboard TOOLs menu. I will help you to link up your project files to your homepage. I would prefer, of course, to have all students maintain his/her own website as this would be an added maintenance task for me.
So, hopefully with this obstacle removed, you can remain excited about learning Photoshop. And, perhaps at a later date, we can review using an html editor to create hyperlinks for your web gallery. Just keep in mind that this is not really necessary. It is more important that you focus on learning photoshop and doing the unit projects.
Submitting files
For students familiar with web technology, you may link each unit project to your own homepage. For students needing help, turn in all project files either on your own webserver or in the Blackboard Digital Dropbox. Please include
with your image a brief description of how you created the image -- your
thought process, the lessons you applied and what you learned along the
way.
For grading purposes, please upload your projects in psd format with all layers intact to your webserver so I can see your working files. However, be sure to link only optimized jpg files to your homepage. Optimized images takes less time to download which will allow viewers to see your images quickly.
NOTE: If you need my help with linking your files, please be sure to upload it to your webserver both the PSD files and the optimized web file to the correct Unit folders, then email me to let me know your files are ready to be linked.

File Size Issues
Use Photoshop's SAVE FOR WEB command to optimize your
files.(Refer to the lecture on Optimizing
file for the Web.)
FOR PROJECT FILES- Please send PSD files along with all the layers intact.
This is the only time you will be turning in large PSD files. Be
sure these image files are 72 dpi. If you must work with hi-res images,
then be sure to reduce the resolution and image size before uploading it.
File Size and Format
If you intend to output your images to any imagesetter printers, work with
hi-res images that is at least 300 dpi, BUT turn in ONLY LOW RES files at
72 dpi. Email or upload to the Drop box. Project Files should not exceed
1 mg. And if you're uploading graphics to your own web page, keep each image
below 50k for low bandwidth and quick reload.
The standard online viewing size is approximately 680x420 wide. Use this
size for all your images.
FILE FORMAT: Turn in only PSD files for Projects. Exercise assignments,
keep as jpg or gifs for uploading to your web page.
Format to turn in.Jpeg
Format to keep for further editing: .psd
See lecture on the different File Formats.
Filename
Let's stay consistent with filenames. We need to name the files in a clear manner so it is easy to archive. Filename format: *First name initial, followed by Last Name_(underscore) E (capital E for exercise or P for project) 1(number of exercise or project) a (lowercase letter for multiple images within one exercise.psd (Photoshop extension format) : LLum_E1a.jpg or LLum_P1.psd.
Unit exercises are optional to turn in. Unit Projects must be turned in as an optimized Jpg and the original Layers psd file.
