Editing the WordPress.com Site

Now that we have a WordPress.com site started, it's time to do some interesting things with the site.

(See the previous class's e-Handout for information on getting started with WordPress.)

The best way to edit the site is to log in at wordpress.com. So I will log in at aardvarks452118963.wordpress.com. I will need to follow these steps to get logged in, and to get ready to edit the site:

  1. Click "Get Started" at the upper right corner of the page at WordPress.com.
  2. Now click "Log In" at the upper right corner of the Wordpress.com page.
  3. Log in. My username is "aardvarks452118963" for this site.
  4. Click "My Site" at the upper left corner of the next Wordpress.com page.

I am going to explain how to edit the site at WordPress.com, using a "support" page at WordPress.com itself.

  1. First, decide what pages you want, and the main information that you want to include on these pages. Make an outline, a list, or a chart, or whatever else helps you to keep track of your plans.

  2. Now make at least some of the pages that you included in your plans. Interestingly, if you started off the same way that I did at WordPress.com, you probably already have some pages. I currently have these pages:

    • Home
    • Contact

At any time while you are working on your pages, you can click the "View Site" or "Preview" link to see what the page will look like on the live site.

  3. Next, configure your site to use a static home page. The reason that you need to configure this setting is that a new WordPress.com website defaults to a "blog" view. Blogs are good in their own appropriate context, but not for a general Web site.

    1. Click on "My Site" at the upper left corner of the next Wordpress.com page.
    2. Click on "Site Pages" in the "Manage" menu at the left.
    3. Click on the "Blog Posts" page item in the list of pages.
    4. Click on the "Customize... button at the bottom right of the page.
    5. Click on the "Homepage Settings" menu item on the left.
    6. Click on the "A static page" radio button in the "Your homepage displays" section at the left.
    7. Now add a new "Home" page:

      1. Click on "Add New Page" under the "Homepage" section at the left.
      2. Type in "Home" for the 'New page title'.
      3. Click the "Add" button.
      4. Click the "Publish" button at the top.

You can click the browser's "Back" button to see the new Home page. You can also go back to the main page at Wordpress.com and click the "View Site" menu item.

  4. And now, edit the menu items. You might already have a menu if you have been following the same steps that I have. In any case, make sure you verify that these things are set:

    1. Click on "My Site".
    2. Click on "Customize" in the left menu.
    3. Click on "Menus" at the left.
    4. You will probably already have a Primary Menu set. Click on "Primary".
    5. If you want to change the name of the Default Menu, click on the "pencil" icon and give it a new name.
    6. You can also add additional pages and links to your menu.

But be aware that you need to create and publish a page before you can add it to the menu.

Let's add an "About Us" page:

    1. Click "My Site" at the top left.
    2. At the right side of the "Site Pages" link, click on the "Add" button.
    3. Type "About Us" in the "Title" edit box.
    4. Add some content. I simply added a paragraph.
    5. You can click "Preview" to see how your page looks. If you do click "Preview", you can return to editing the page by clicking the browser's "Back" button and then clicking the "CONTINUE EDITING About Us" at the top of the page.
    6. When you are finished adding content, click the "Publish..." button.
    7. You might see another "Publish" button. If so, click it.
    8. Click "Close" to return to the "My Site" page.

And now add the "About Us" page to the site's menu:
    1. Click on "My Site".
    2. Click on "Customize" in the left menu.
    3. Click on "Menus" at the left.
    4. Click on "Primary".
    5. Click on "+ Add Items".
    6. You should see "About Us" in the list of Pages. Click on it. The list on the left, under "Primary", should now have "About Us" in it.
    7. Click the "Reorder" link.
    8. Click the "^" to move "About Us" above "Contact".
    9. Click "Done".
    10. Click "Publish".
    11. Click the "X" to return to the "My Site" page.

You can also add a drop-down menu by using the drag-and-drop feature. Just drag the menu item to be under the main menu item that you want, and then drag it to the right to indent it.

  5. Keep adding pages and adding them to the menu, until you are satisfied with the site.
