Screen Capture

How do I take a screenshot (image of the screen) in Windows?

There are two methods.
Method 1:

  1. Press "Print Scrn" (Print Screen) on the keyboard — next to "Scroll Lock" at the top.
  2. The image is on the clipboard. To retreive, open a graphics program and paste the image (Edit>paste). You get the whole screen.
  3. Crop, retouch, or whatever you need to do to the image, then save in the file format you want.

Method 2: Pressing the combination of Alt + Print Scrn places the current active window into the clipboard. Then paste into a graphics program. You don't get the whole screen, only the active window.

If you don't have a graphics program, use the one that comes with your computer — Microsoft Paint. (Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > Paint)

IrFanView - A highly recommended FREE graphics production program. This small, compact freeware not only does screen captures, but just about everything you could need for processing images.

How do I take a screenshot (image of the screen) in Mac?

Command + shift + 3 will get you an image of the whole screen. It will put a pdf image, or a png, (depending on what system you have) on your desktop. Works with all systems, even 9. The Mac automatically names these "Picture1.png", "picture2.png", so you will want to change the file name to something you can recognize. Usually opens in Preview, but any graphics program will open.

Command + shift + 4 will get you a crosshair (All versions of System 10). Now you can mark the exact area you want for a screen capture. Also goes to the desktop with same names as described above.

Software: not really needed, but Snapz Pro is recommended for heavy-duty screenshot production. There is a free version; the paid version captures movies!
