United we stand, divided we fall

Here's a story my parents once told me, a story that has been passed down and that demonstrates the power of unity: There was a man who had three sons. When he was old, he called his three sons together in an attempt to pass down what he realized would be a priceless legacy. He told each of his sons to get a stick. When they had done so, he asked them to break their sticks. Each one broke his stick with satisfying ease. "Now get another stick," he said to them and each one got another stick. This time he told them to put the three sticks together and bind them up into one bundle. After they had done this, he asked them to break the bundle of sticks. After taking turns, the bundles remained unbroken.

"United we stand, but divided we fall," he said to them. With this illustration he pointed out to them that if they remain united, they would remain undefeatable.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon

"Neither when we have chosen our way can we keep company with those who go the other way. There must come with the decision for truth a corresponding protest against error."
